    Notes The Couch

Since its inception in 2007, the band has released three EP’s: New Roman Buffalo, Close To You, and Godsick Blues. Each EP is a footprint exposing a new, bluesy layer of the band’s progressing sound on their journey to their first full-length album, Old & Touchin’ Blue, released in December of last year. The album exhibits a distinctly refined growth in their music. KUT showed their support for the new record by making the band’s single “Closer to You” their Song of the Day. The track was not initially going to be on the album, but did so well as a single that the band decided to include it. With an exciting brand of indie rock blues, The Couch offers listeners a warm plate of passionate vocals, gritty guitar riffs, and a sweeping approach to soulful rock ‘n’ roll.

The quartet has roots in Texas State territory, where they began on – you guessed it – a couch. Drummer Jud Johnson and vocalist Taylor Wilkins met as students at the University and launched the musical endeavor as an entertaining pastime that could, in the least, merit some attention; i.e. from the ladies. Since making the trek to Austin, The Couch has adopted the capital city as their hometown. At the height of their success, it’s hard to believe that a band like The Couch is the product of an inadvertent effort. Along with a promising new record and a tour to follow, The Couch just recently welcomed its fourth member, Sara Houser to the rock fusion. Houser was inducted as a means to satiate the original line-up’s craving for more elements throughout their music, but came about unintentionally as a result of Wilkins’ research project about female musicians. Although she was not introduced until after the album dropped, Houser is one of those multi-faceted breeds, complementing each track with one or more of her piano, guitar, percussion, or vocal skills at each live show.

As regulars on the Austin music scene roster, The Couch has shared the stage with innumerous adored locals like Bright Light Social Hour, Zlam Dunk, and Little Radar; to name a few. Patrons have grown to anticipate the energetic experience the band consistently creates. Witness the charm that has granted them a heap of devotees over a handful of years before their big Mr. Fest appearance, headlining at Triple Crown on February 17th.
